Overview

About The Project

This is a redesign case study project of Caltrain App which is the official ticketing App for Caltrain. Previously, the Caltrain App had less features and was less intuitive. This redesign study includes user research, target audience research and introducing new features such as train schedules according to the departure time, creating alerts and activating saved tickets at any point of time.

My Role

I worked as a UX and Visual Designer for this project. My responsibilities included defining the solution for the problem, conducting user research and market research along with user interviews and expert interviews. I also built the information architecture, design strategy. Sketching, wireframing & prototyping and designing visuals constituted a major part of the project development.

The Challenge & The Solution

Making Caltrain App usable and desirable by redesigning the App. Redesigning and restructuring the information architecture, visual design and adding more features to App will help attract more users and make their experience desirable and accessible. Therefore redesigning will make it more intuitive and useful!

Target Audience

User Research

Conducting interviews and surveys at various Caltrain stations it was found that people had started uninstalling the app or majority of the target audience were not using Caltrain App as they used to look for the schedules on the brower instead of using any app. They used this App only for ticketing and thus Caltrain App needs a redesign to overhaul its usability and intuitiveness inorder to improve the user experience.

Market Research

SF Bay Area Transit Muni, BART, CalTrain, AC | Bart Runner App | Muni App These are the competitors of Caltrain. These apps are updated and Caltrain if updated will gain a good position in the market as the missing features significantly affect the user experience. Reading reviews and reports on Alexa.com to understand the latest trends and current target audience.

Interview questions

  1. What type of Apps do you use to aid you with local transportation?
  2. How did you come to know about this App?
  3. Do you think a majority of people use clipper cards instead of the Caltrain App? Why?
  4. Can you define a situation where the Caltrain App has saved your time or has helped you with time management?

Research Findings

  1. Added features such as setting the departure time and day/date, train schedules, buying tickets, tracking your journey and reminders/alerts.
  2. Adding good and desired interactions.
  3. Making it more intuitive and usable.
  4. Improving the information architecture.
  5. Create new look and feel thus improving visual design.

Conclusions

After interviewing the target audience at various stations I could identify that the Caltrain App needs an update. This user research coupled with my Market research definitively concluded that the Caltrain App needed a redesign to overhaul its usability and intuitiveness inorder to improve the user experience. This project helped in various aspects such as documentation of the user research and the market research. Updating the app by adding new features such as train schedules, ticket activation and creating alerts/ notification proved to be challenging.
